18. September 2007, 14:44:42 Am 19. September 1982 schlug der Student und spätere Informatiker Scott E. Fahlman nach ironischen Missverständnissen und Witzen in einem Bulletin Board der Carnegie Mellon University vor, aus ASCII-Zeichen das inzwischen weltberühmt gewordene Signet eines seitwärts nachgebildenden Lachens zu benutzen. Dieser Vorschlag verbreitete sich über das Arpanet bis zum Xerox-Forschungszentrum PARC (Kalifornien). Lange galt dieser Post als verschollen. In der Folge entstanden weitere Symbole. Nach umfangreichen Nachforschungen gelang es Jeff Baird am 10. September 2002, die originale Nachricht von Fahlman auf einem Backup-Band aus dem Jahre 1982 wiederzufinden.
