Microsoft hat über das Microsoft Download Center drei neue Updates für Windows Vista veröffentlicht.

Am 19. September 1982 schlug der Student und spätere Informatiker Scott E. Fahlman nach ironischen Missverständnissen und Witzen in einem Bulletin Board der Carnegie Mellon University vor, aus ASCII-Zeichen das inzwischen weltberühmt gewordene Signet eines seitwärts nachgebildenden Lachens zu benutzen.
Dieser Vorschlag verbreitete sich über das Arpanet bis zum Xerox-Forschungszentrum PARC (Kalifornien). Lange galt dieser Post als verschollen. In der Folge entstanden weitere Symbole. Nach umfangreichen Nachforschungen gelang es Jeff Baird am 10. September 2002, die originale Nachricht von Fahlman auf einem Backup-Band aus dem Jahre 1982 wiederzufinden.

Als Emoticon werden Zeichenfolgen (aus normalen Satzzeichen) bezeichnet, die ein Smiley nachbilden, um in der schriftlichen elektronischen Kommunikation Stimmungs- und Gefühlszustände auszudrücken. Sie stammen aus der Zeit, in der über das Internet nur Texte verschickt werden konnten. Die Bezeichnung Emoticon ist eine Wortkreuzung, gebildet aus Emotion und Icon. Erkennen kann man sie am besten, indem man den Kopf etwas nach links neigt.

Die aus Japan stammenden Emojis sind eine Sonderform des Emoticons (siehe unten). Verwendet werden Emoticons etwa in Chaträumen, im Usenet und im E-Mail-Verkehr. Anders als die üblichen Emoticons zeigen die Emojis das Smiley nicht gedreht.
